An Inspector Calls...

S3/4 have been working on the play "An Inspector Calls" by JB Priestley in English this year. The drama students have also based their own production piece for unit 3 of the course on the play. We all went to see director Stephen Daldry's award winning production of the play at the Theatre Royal in Glasgow. The performance was outstanding and everyone thoroughly enjoyed it. The set was superb and the use of the stage and theatre arts to enhance the play was very cleverly done. For more information have a look at this website: http://www.aninspectorcalls.com/

Here are some images from the performance:

We have been rehearsing our S3/4 drama production piece every Wednesday morning. This week was our first try at a dress rehearsal - we had lots of fun but we will definitely need to polish up on a few parts! Deborah and Gabriella are both playing Eva Smith (one who tells the story and the other who appears in flashbacks), Hannah plays a factory worker and Sheila Birling, Jessica plays a factory worker and Mrs Birling and Daniel plays all the male roles!

This photo is taken from the beginning of the play with Deborah, Jessica and Hannah as factory workers and Daniel as the pompus Mr Birling:

Mardi Gras!

Megan has been looking at a Mardi Gras theme for her design project in Intermediate art this year. She has created some exciting mask / headpiece designs based on exotic birds. She has used a range of vivid colours and tried to make everything as eye-catching as possible. The swirling shapes on the blue mask are taken from the shape of a flamingo's head and neck. Which do you like best?

Visit of Duncan McNeil

Today in ourS3/4 enterprise class we were visited by our local MSP, Duncan McNeil. He told us how he came to be an MSP and develop an interest in politics. We have been having various speakers from different walks of life and different businesses so it was interesting to hear a different viewpoint from someone who serves the public and tries t make life better for the people of Inverclyde. Here is what we thought of what he had to say:

He had a fascinating view of his job. - Robyn

He told us how he was involve with the 'Show the Red Card to Racism' initiative which was very interesting! - Daniel

It was interesting to hear about his background in the shipyards. - Rebecca

He gave me a clearer view of what an MSP does and how they help their community. - Deborah

It is interesting how heworked at the shipyards and went on to become an MSP. - Craig

Many thanks to Duncan for coming in and speaking to us. We hope you like the school and will be a frequent visitor in the future!

Broader Curriculum - Curling!

This term we have just started an new block of our hugely popular 'Broader Curriculum' activities. These involve children in P7/S1 and this term we are either designing and cooking our own soups or trying a spot of curling.
Yesterday was the first try of curling for many of the children who have chosen it and we got on really well. We were at the Waterfront ice rink and had our first curling lesson. The children were practising 'sliding out' and learning about the curling stones which are made from ailsa craig granite. As you can see it was a very successful first session and we look forward to celebrating the progress we will all make over the next 6 weeks!

Monet!

In Art primary 7 have been looking at some of the work of the impressionist painters. We have looked at paintings by people such as Claude Monet and discussed how they used line, tone and colour to create feeling and warmth in their paintings. One of the pictures we looked at was by Claude Monet and shows some waterlilies. See what you think of our impressionist paintings in comparison!

Mr J :)

Monet's effort.... not bad...

aha!... 'Waterlilies' by Daria!

Here are some photos of the back stage preparations...

Fashion update...

Following on from my recent post about the S3/4/5 fashion design project, here are some more pictures of Jessica and Rebecca's outfits. These two outfits have taken the longest as they have required the most sewing - well done to Jessica and Rebecca for persevering! Both outfits are coming on really well and should be finished just after the February holiday week.

The swirl pattern on Rebecca's coat was inspired by St Basil's Cathedral in Moscow.

Jessica's dress was inspired by a visit to see "Swan Lake" and the pattern is made up of repeating swan head shapes.
